Why cows are sacred to Hindus ?

Often I find people curious to know the reason why we hold the cows to be sacred or holy in the Hindu religion.
People think why cows are sacred and not some other animal. Why particularly cows ??

I will answer it. Indian civilization is ancient and I am taking you back into the time when society was not as developed as it is today. People led simple rural lives and they kept domestic animals on their farms. Medical science was not as advanced as it is today. When women were delivering babies there was every chance that they could die during childbirth. And God forbid, if this took place, then the baby would not get its mother's care. And a new born baby subsisted only on milk for its food. At such times it was found that cow's milk was the nearest to mother's milk in content and was easy for the baby to digest in comparison to the milk of other animals. So a cow became the baby's foster mother. How could you possibly think of eating your mother? And the cow is also associated with one of the gods in the Hindu religion, Lord Krishna. So it is a religious and moral obligation on the part of every Hindu to abstain from eating beef.
