Cricket in India

Sachin Tendulkar - India's star batsman

Cricket is a much loved game in India. No other game in India evokes such passion and emotions as this game.Indians become crazy when they win a cricket match. Cricket is to India what football or soccer is to Europe.

When the Indian cricket team plays well and wins, there is no end to celebrations  and happiness. Firecrackers are burst and people are delirious with joy. But.. heaven help if there is a defeat. Then the people get upset and and every Indian becomes an expert at finding the perfect solution for the national team !

On 2nd April 2011, India won the World Cup Cricket championship. Oh...you should have been here to believe it ! The streets were choked with horn blaring vehicles, drums beating to a rhythmic pattern, dancing Indians waving the tri-colour proudly and shouting themselves hoarse. The celebrations went on throughout the night. The party had just begun !

No other sport in India gets such solid support from the masses.Cricketers are elevated to a status of demi-gods. When they win a big tournament, there is no end to the prizes given to them. Money flows, plots of land are given, free travel by railways, by some airlines etc. Some people criticise these benefits given to the cricketers as other sportsmen do not have such a mass following and hence they do not get benefits to this extent. Below is a link to the final match played between India and Sri Lanka in Mumbai for the World Cup Cricket championship 2011 which India won by 6 wickets. It was a thrilling match and India deserved the win for this stupendous feat. It was the first time that a host team won on its home soil and also the first time a team had to chase such a big total.

All Indians, whether in India or abroad celebrated the victory with unabashed joy. All the streets in India saw firecrackers bursting, the shouts of the revellers, the dancing, the beating of drums and the loud singing with gay abandon. It was like a festival ! Their joy knew no bounds.Oh! The cricket team gave all Indians a reason to let go their emotions, some cried with happiness and hugged each other. The scenes were seen everywhere..all over India. What a win !! What a style of clinching the victory with a sixer!
